Our History

We began as usedhockey.com in 1999 as a small store specializing in the buying, trading, and reselling of used hockey equipment. Though we changed our name to Penalty Box Sports in 2003 to be more reflective of the merchandise we carry – hockey equipment, used lacrosse items and gear for officiating all sports, “used hockey” is still the heart and soul of our business.

You never know what you might find in our store, as our inventory changes daily. We supplement our used gear selection by carrying limited quantities of new gear. We carry all the essentials and accessory items for the players. Our website is only a sneak peak at the various treasures you will find at Penalty Box Sports.

The Penalty Box Today

Our selection of used hockey gear reflects the community we live in. Ithaca has two youth organizations, TGHA for girls and IYHA for boys and girls; a boy’s and a girl’s team at the high school level; two adult women’s teams, the Sirens and the Furies; “A”, “B”, and “C” level adult leagues; and Cornell and Ithaca College field numerous club, intramural, and departmental teams. Areas such as Cortland, Syracuse, Elmira, and Binghamton have similar programs. Hockey is everywhere and we are fortunate to be able to draw our customer base from this very large community.

Lacrosse is becoming a wide spread sport at all levels of play in the area for women and men. Cornell, Ithaca College, and Syracuse have great college programs. The number of high school teams is increasing, as well as the number of youth leagues throughout the area. Our goal is to provide this growing community with equipment to suit their playing needs.
